August... the last month of summer and hopefully, the last month of the heat wave of 2005! August is a time of transition... not only in climate, but in our activities as well.
For many families this is back-to-school-season. Some may have little ones in school for the first time, while others are sending an almost grown-up child off to college. This may give some of you gals extra time on the golf course! For those with the freedom of a summer "off," this is the time to get ready to go back to work. It's a great time to reap the rewards of "end-of-summer-sales!" This late summer, or Indian Summer is a time of many transitions.
The intense heat of this summer has left many of us a little ragged, low on energy and eager for fall's cooler temperatures. This late summer season, although a short period, is one of intense change in and around us. August may bring a variety of climate conditions, which seems normal in Colorado. Gardens are producing their final fruits of the season with an abundant harvest just weeks away. What does all this change have to do with our health?
With so much activity going on around us... planning, gathering and organizing, it's easy to get swept up in the flurry of motion that we often find ourselves completely exhausted (or burned-out) by summer's end. With so many "loose ends" to be taken care of before fall, how do we maintain balance?
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! Summer is a season of freedom from the routine for most of us... relaxed schedules, fun food, more activity, less sleep or travel to new environments. As the fall season approaches, you may need to take inventory of your wellness. Just as nature winds down from an active summer season, your body and mind also need some transition time to maintain balance before moving on. There are many possibilities to choose from, and only you know what will work best for our body type and personality style. Anything that helps you really relax and let go of your tension is beneficial for maintaining balance. As always, I strongly urge you to drink more water! This helps all physiological processes function properly and in balance with other body systems. Many people find that an end of summer / pre-fall cleanse or fast improves their energy and endurance through this transitional season. It's amazing how active many people are in summer, but do not actually pursue healthy exercise. Perhaps this would be a good time to begin!
Life takes us on many journeys, so it is very important to have a healthy home (body) to return to for relaxation and renewal.
